Deputy arrests convicted felon for possession of ammunition, marijuana while wearing flak jacket.

A Sonoma County Sheriff’s Deputy arrested a man this morning after he was found in a parked car wearing a military style flak jacket and possessing ammunition, marijuana. Shortly after 2:00 AM this morning a deputy was patrolling in the 32000 block of McCray when he noticed a suspicious black Volkswagon GTI parked facing the wrong way on the street.

As the deputy approached the car he found it was occupied by two people. The deputy contacted a man, later identified as Julian Salazar, a 42-year-old from Rio Lindo in the passenger seat. A strong odor of marijuana was emanating from the open window and the deputy noticed Salazar was wearing a camouflage military style ballistic flak jacket with hard armor plates and rubber gloves. A large bag containing over two pounds of marijuana was on the floorboard at his feet.

The deputy got Salazar out of the car and handcuffed at which point he found 27 live .45 caliber rounds in his pants pockets. Salazar is a convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing ammunition or guns. He also had a misdemeanor warrant for driving without a license. The deputy searched Salazar and the car for a gun but was unable to locate one. Inside the car the deputy retrieved the marijuana along with a glass methamphetamine smoking pipe.

A woman who had been sitting in the driver seat was also temporarily detained and searched but she was released without charges.

Salazar was questioned about wearing the bulletproof flak jacket and he said he wears it when he goes camping, which he said he was intending to do. Based on the flak jacket and rubber gloves worn by Salazar it is likely that he was prevented from committing a more serious crime by the deputy.

Ultimately Salazar was booked into the Sonoma County Jail on charges of being a felon in possession of ammunition, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of over 1 ounce of marijuana and the arrest warrant.
