This past weekend was a somber look at how quickly things can change on the roadway. The multiple car crash on I-41 is reported to be the largest car crash in Wisconsin history.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by the accident.  The event brings to question, “What should I do if I am involved in a serious, multi-car crash?”.
 
First, look for injuries.  Check yourself and your passengers for signs of injury.   
 
Second, call 911, and provide as much information to the dispatch center as possible (i.e., observable injuries to yourself and others, request an ambulance if you think someone is hurt, provide the number of auto’s involved and your location, etc.).
 
Third, stay safe, assess the situation for your immediate safety.  Stay in your car if there is a risk of injury or if moving might put you at risk of further injury. 
 
Fourth, if your car is creating a hazard for other motorists, move it to a safer location if possible.  If it can’t be moved, turn on your hazard lights.
 
Fifth, remain as calm as possible.  Police are on the way.  Follow police instructions when they arrive. 
 
Sixth, never leave the scene of an accident. 
 
Thankfully accidents of this magnitude are not common but similar circumstances do occur that require the aforementioned steps while at an accident scene.
 
As always, please drive safely in order to avoid being in an accident.  This past week Sheboygan experienced a 1% reduction in accidents compared to last year (293 accidents thus far in 2019).  Let’s work together to stay safe and continue to prevent accidents in our community.
