Fatal Pedestrian Motor Vehicle Crash

On Monday, June 20, 2022 at approximately 2120 hours, a Middle Township Police Officer was responding to an unrelated call for service and noticed several vehicles stopped in the area of Route 9 and State Highway 147.  Investigation revealed a pedestrian was crossing the intersection of Route 9 and State Highway 147 in the crosswalk and was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. The pedestrian, Richard Geere, age 59 of Burleigh, New Jersey was pronounced deceased at the scene.  The accused vehicle continued to flee the scene until it crashed in the area of the 200 block of Indian Trail Road.  The driver of the vehicle then fled the crash on foot. The driver, Glenn Dunleavy of Del Haven, New Jersey, was later located and arrested. The investigation revealed Dunleavy was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed when he made contact with the pedestrian.  Dunleavy was charged with Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Accident, 2C:11-5.1; a 2nd degree crime and he was lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Center.  Additional charges may be pending.  Also assisting were the Middle Township Crash Team, Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, Cape May County Sheriff’s Office K-9, New Jersey State Police Aviation Unit, Green Creek Fire Department, Goshen Fire Department and Rio Grande Fire Department.        

All charges are accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until and unless they are proven guilty.
