Off-Duty Veteran Sergeant Dies During a Motorcycle Escort

Jan. 24, 2022 – The Harris County Sheriff's Office is saddened to report the passing of Sgt. Ramon Gutierrez. At about 12:25 a.m., the 20-year department veteran was fatally struck by a suspected intoxicated driver in the 8900 block of the E. Sam Houston Parkway N., at the southbound exit ramp for Tidwell Rd. in east Harris County. He was directing traffic as an off-duty motorcycle escort for an oversized load. He succumbed to his injuries at Memorial Hermann Hospital at about 1:25 a.m.
The driver, Lavillia Spry, 40, was arrested and charged with Intoxication Manslaughter, Failure to Stop and Render Aid, and Evading Arrest. She was booked into the Harris County Jail.

"Our entire Sheriff's Office family is grieving the sudden loss of our long-time brother,” said Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. "Sgt. Gutierrez served his community with honor and distinction, and we ask for everyone to lift his family in prayer during this tremendously difficult time.”

Sgt. Gutierrez, 45, was a supervisor in the Vehicular Crimes Division. He joined the Sheriff’s Office in 2002 and previously served as a detention officer, patrol deputy, and accident investigator. 
Sgt. Gutierrez is survived by his wife and three children, a daughter and two sons. 
Funeral arrangements for Sgt. Gutierrez are pending.
