On April 21^st, 2021 at approximately 1:55 PM the Middle Township Police Department responded to a possible domestic dispute in the Burleigh section of the Township.  Upon arrival the parties were separated with one officer speaking inside a residence with the victim and Cpl. James D’Alonzo standing outside with the accused party, John Paulsen, age 35.  While speaking with Paulsen, Paulsen attempted to strike Cpl. D’Alonzo with a pair of boots he was holding and then attacked Cpl. D’Alonzo by punching him and taking him to the ground.  Class II Christian Quaranta came outside of the residence to assist as the struggle continued and was able to get Paulsen off Cpl. D’Alonzo.  Paulsen and Cpl. D’Alonzo went back down to the ground again where Paulsen attempted to take Cpl. D’Alonzo’s handgun from his holster.  Pepper spray was used and Class II Quaranta again pushed Paulsen off Cpl. D’Alonzo.  Paulsen was then given commands to comply and was then placed under arrest.  Paulsen was charged with one count of Aggravated Assault on a Domestic Violence Victim, a 3^rd Degree Crime, two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, a 3^rd Degree Crime, on count of Attempting to Disarm a Law Enforcement Officer, a 2^nd Degree Crime, and one count of Resisting Arrest, 3^rd Degree Crime.  Paulsen was lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Facility.  Cpl. D’Alonzo was treated at Cape Regional Medical Center for minor injuries.
