On January 23, 2020 at approximately 1:47 PM the Middle Township Police Department responded to Fresh Custom Upholstery, located at 1127 Route 47 South in the Rio Grande Section of the Township, for an out of control subject.  Upon arrival of the first officer, he encountered the subject who was just in underwear briefs and causing damage inside the business.  Upon contact with the officer the subject removed his underwear.  The officer attempted to place the subject under arrest, however the subject resisted and attempted to remove the officer’s handgun from the holster.  The second officer arrived and prevented the subject from obtaining the officers’ firearm.  Additional officers arrived on scene and the subject was placed into custody.  The subject, a seventeen-year-old male, was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center for treatment for minor injuries.  Three Middle Township officers were injured during the incident and were also treated at Cape Regional Medical Center and were released.  One officer received a dislocated shoulder, one officer received a head injury and another officer was treated for glass in his leg. The Lower Township Police Department, the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office and Cape May County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit assisted on scene.  Middle Township EMS and Lower Township EMS transported the injured parties.

The subject was charged with Attempting to Disarm a Law Enforcement Officer, a second-degree crime, two Counts of Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, a third-degree crime and Criminal Mischief, a fourth-degree crime.

Any charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until and unless they are proven guilty.
