The Novato Police Department is joining the Neighbors App by Ring!
This app provides our community with an additional crime reduction strategy in support of our mission to decrease crime and improve safety throughout the city of Novato.
The Neighbors app creates a digital neighborhood watch community that can share real-time, local crime and safety information, whether or not they own a Ring device. The Neighbors app network connects millions of users across the nation.
The Neighbors app will allow the Novato Police Department to:
- Send real-time alerts to residents in a specified area.
- Provide updates about local crime and safety incidents.
- Submit “Requests” for video footage and information relevant to local investigations.
NPD will use the platform as an additional way to share alerts to the community. We believe that employing this technology will help keep our residents safe and build on our communication with Novato residents. Our partnership with Ring and use of the Neighbors app will aid in our ongoing crime reduction efforts.
Privacy Concerns?
Posts made by users other than Novato Police do not display the poster’s identity. For example: it shows us that “Neighbor 15” created a post or comment.
Joining the Neighbors app does not grant Novato Police access to cameras or user data (camera owner information or camera location). We can only view content residents have publicly posted to the Neighbors app or that they have decided to share with us in response to a specific request.
**Residents do not need to own a Ring device or any other home security system in order to download and use the Neighbors app. Anyone with a compatible smartphone or tablet can download the Neighbors app.
The Neighbors app is available for free on iOS, Android and FireOS devices. Residents can text ‘JOINTODAY’ to 555888 from their smartphone to receive a link to download the Neighbors app or click the link to download the FREE Neighbors App here: https://download.ring.com/neighbors
Like other social media sharing platforms, law enforcement participation on the Neighbors app is not monitored 24 hours a day. If you see something suspicious, please call the Novato Police Department at 415-897-1122 or if an emergency, please call 9-1-1 immediately.
