Traffic hazard U.S. 278 westbound at Beach City Road intersection. Motorists asked to use Matthews Drive to avoid. 
Just after 1:00 this morning, a motorist struck a traffic light pole at the intersection of U.S. 278 westbound and Beach City Road on Hilton Head Island.
Currently, motorists are unable to make a left hand turn onto Beach City Road from U.S. 278 eastbound, and are asked to use Matthews Drive or side roads leading to Main Street.
Motorists traveling on U.S. 278 westbound are temporarily unable to pass through the Beach City Road intersection, and are asked to use Matthews Drive to avoid delays.
We are working to repair the traffic pole in order for motorists to safely travel through the area.
