Law Enforcement Torch Run on June 18th--Expect some traffic delays along the route

On June 18th, 2019 at 10 am, members of the Berkeley Police Department (BPD) and the UC Berkeley Police Department (UCPD) will be escorting the “Flame of Hope” in support of Special Olympics as it travels through the City of Berkeley.

UCPD will begin the Berkeley leg of the torch's journey when they take the handoff from the Emeryville Police team at San Pablo Avenue and Burnett Streets.

UCPD’s team will carry the flame and run east along Ashby Avenue making the northbound turn onto Adeline Street.  They will continue on Adeline Street to Dwight Way where they will turn east and continue eastbound to Telegraph Avenue. They will run northbound on Telegraph Avenue onto campus.  Their team will then run through campus relinquishing the torch to BPD at Oxford Street and Allston Way.

BPD’s team will carry the torch through parts of downtown Berkeley where they will pass in front of City Hall (2180 Milvia Street) and then continue west along Center Street turning north on Martin Luther King Jr. Way.  Our team will continue north in front of the Berkeley Public Safety Building along Martin Luther King Jr. Way merging onto The Alameda.  They will then turn west on Solano Avenue where they will pass the torch to the Albany Police Department team at Solano and Peralta Avenues. The torch will continue on to its final destination at the Northern California Special Olympics competitions, held at UC Davis on June 21-23.

BPD and UCPD have been long-time supporters of Special Olympics and are proud of this opportunity to once again give back to the community. We hope to see our community turn out to cheer on our efforts. If you are driving in the area, expect potential traffic delays.  For the runners safety, there will be marked police vehicles with their flashing lights on leading and trailing the participants.  Please exercise caution when passing them.
