A traffic stop in rural south Texas has netted the capture of a murder suspect from 22 years ago in Harris County.

On April 17, 2019 Trooper G. Rios of the Texas Department of Public Safety conducted a traffic stop on FM-133 in Dimmit County, Texas, on a white Dodge Ram for speeding.

The driver identified himself as Jose Catarino Duron by providing a social security number belonging to another person.

The Trooper detained Duron, and transported him to the border patrol station in Carrizo Springs Texas.

During the automated finger print system (AFIS) check, his finger prints revealed his true identity to be Daniel Duron III, wanted in Harris County for murder and attempted Capital Murder since March of 1997.

On March 15, 1997, Duron and another male, Juan Soto, pulled their car in front of a vehicle driven by a 16-year-old male and three other juveniles on Hollyvale Street in north east Harris County.

Duron accused the male of striking his vehicle and demanded money from him and the others at gunpoint. As the 16-year old tried to drive away, Duron and Soto shot at the vehicle with handguns.

Passenger Imel Jones, 15, died on scene, and a 15-year-old female and 16-year-old male were also hit by gunfire.

Both men fled the Houston area after Harris County Sheriff’s Office investigators filed murder charges on them.

Juan Soto is still being sought.

Duron was arrested and charged with Failure to Identify Fugitive with Intent to Give False Information.

He was released to the Dimmit County Sheriff’s Office while awaiting his return to Harris County.

We commend Trooper Rios for the diligence and effort he displayed that led to the capture of a murder suspect.
