Two People Killed, Two Injured in House Fire

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad and Arson Section detectives are investigating a house fire that killed two people in North Patchogue early this morning.

Fifth Precinct police officers, firefighters from North Patchogue, Patchogue, Holbrook and Medford, and members of Medford Ambulance responded to 86 Sinn St., at approximately 1:30 a.m.

A male resident, who was returning to the home, discovered the fire shortly before 1:30 a.m. and called 911. Fifth Precinct officers arrived on the scene at 1:33 a.m., attempted to enter through the front door, and were forced back by flames. Patrol Sergeant Michael Guerrisi and Police Officers Taylor Herbst and William Boyd gained access to the basement, where they woke a 47-year-old male resident and brought him safely out of the house. The male resident was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue with non-life-threatening injuries. Officer Herbst sustained a back injury during the rescue and was transported to the same hospital for treatment.

After the fire was extinguished, the bodies of two adult females were located inside. The women, both residents of the home, were pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.  Their names are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

A preliminary investigation by Arson Section detectives has determined the cause of the fire to be non-criminal.
