Suffolk County Officials To Warn Residents of New Phone Scam
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart will provide details of a new phone scam that involves callers stating they work for the United States Social Security Administration.
A Melville man reported to police that he recently fell victim to a phone scam during which he provided gift card numbers in the amount of $1,400 to two different callers who stated they worked for the United States Social Security Administration and he needed to pay money to clear up a warrant. Both calls showed “Social Security” on the victim’s caller ID with a legitimate telephone number for the United States Social Security Administration. The callers used spoofing software to enable the calls to appear as if they were coming from a legitimate source.
