Advisory

Update on Avalon Villas vehicle thefts: Mercedes recovered after pursuit in Jasper County. Three juveniles detained.

Details of Avalon Villas Incidents

Last Wednesday morning at approximately 4:00 a.m., a resident of Avalon Villas on Hilton Head Island reported that she was looking out of a window and observed a Mercedes and a sport utility vehicle pull up to her Honda Accord, which was parked in her garage. The resident reported that after the two vehicles pulled up, she observed her Honda Accord drive off. The two vehicles—a gray Dodge Durango and a silver Mercedes sedan—that the resident saw pulling up to her Honda Accord were later reported stolen by other residents of Avalon Villas.

A short time after the report was taken, the stolen Honda Accord and Dodge Durango were observed by deputies in the Bluffton area. Deputies focused on the Honda Accord and attempted a traffic stop. The driver of the Honda Accord sped up and deputies lost contact with it in the area of Alljoy Road. Minutes later, deputies found the Honda Accord—parked and unoccupied—at the Alljoy Boad Landing. The subjects were not located.

In addition, and also early last Wednesday morning, Bluffton police officers, who were made aware of the Avalon Villas incidents, observed the stolen Dodge Durango being driven toward Jasper County. Bluffton police officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver of the Dodge Durango sped up. For safety concerns, Bluffton police officers terminated their pursuit. When officers lost contact with it, the Dodge Durango was still heading in the direction of Jasper County.

Sheriff's Office deputies continued to receive reports from residents at Avalon Villas throughout last Wednesday morning. At least ten residents reported that subjects had entered their enclosed garages and either stole or attempted to steal property. Video surveillance footage obtained from a resident at Avalon Villas showed four subjects entering a garage.Three of the subjects had covered their face, while one did not. Attached to this advisory is a screen shot of the subject who did not cover his face. A portion of the video surveillance footage from the burglaries remains posted on the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/BeaufortCoSO/

Case Update

Last Thursday morning, the stolen Dodge Durango was found abandoned in the parking lot of Courtney Bend apartments in Hardeeville. No subjects were located at the time that the Dodge Durango was recovered.

Late yesterday afternoon, Hardeeville police officers observed the stolen Mercedes being driven in their jurisdiction and attempted a traffic stop. The driver of the Mercedes sped up and led Hardeeville police officers—later joined by Jasper County Sheriff's Office deputies—on a high speed chase. While attempting to elude the pursuing officers and deputies, the driver lost control of the Mercedes near the intersection of Becks Ferry Road and Purrysburg Road. The Mercedes left the roadway and came to rest in a ditch, where the male driver and the two male occupants fled on foot into a wooded area. Jasper County deputies with K-9 units and Hardeeville police officers tracked the subjects and were able to apprehend all three.

The three subjects, who were identified to be juveniles, were detained by Hardeeville police officers on charges pertaining to possession of the stolen Mercedes. Beaufort County Sheriff's Office investigators were contacted and responded to Hardeeville to interview the three juveniles regarding the incidents at Avalon Villas and other recent thefts occurring on Hilton Head Island and in Bluffton. Following their interviews, the three juveniles were transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia, where they are being held pending appearances in Family Court. As of today, the three juveniles had not been charged/petitioned to Family Court for any Hilton Head Island or Bluffton incidents.

Anyone with information on the identities of the subjects involved in last Wednesday's Avalon Villas burglaries/vehicle thefts is encouraged to call Staff Sergeant Calendine at 843-255-3427 or Crimestoppers of the Lowcountry at 843-554-1111 if wishing to remain anonymous and for possible reward.
