Advisory

Projected path of Hurricane Florence from National Hurricane Center 5:00 p.m. High surf advisory for Beaufort County.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) released its 5:00 p.m. update on the projected path of Hurricane Florence. The NHC advises that Hurricane Florence is moving northwest at 16 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour.

Late this afternoon, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston issued high Surf advisory and instructions for Beaufort County residents and guests. The NWS advisory goes into effect at 10:00 tonight. According to instructions accompanying the NWS advisory, "everyone should remain out of the water. Mariners should use extreme caution, especially near inlets, cuts and bays. Swells approaching these areas can lead to large, dangerous breaking waves. Keep a clear distance away from the ocean. Structures such as piers and jetties will be particularly treacherous. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property".

Please continue to plan ahead of this storm, as there still remains uncertainty on its path and what impact it will have on Beaufort County. State, county and municipal emergency management officials are closely monitoring Hurricane Florence and are prepared to rapidly implement resources if necessary.

Currently, Beaufort County is not under a governor’s evacuation order, though based on forecasts, we urge residents and guests located in low-lying areas and others wishing to minimize their exposure to this dangerous storm to evacuate south into Georgia, Florida or, at the very least, to higher ground.

The Sheriff's Office will continue to keep you advised of developments with Hurricane Florence, as will state and municipal governments. We encourage you to remain vigilant and stay informed on Hurricane Florence's projected path through the National Hurricane Center https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

We ask you to only rely on official sources for information on Hurricane Florence and to please avoid misinformation spread through social media. Please share this information with family and friends. Thank you for staying informed.
