Deputy injured during escape attempt.
A Sonoma County Sheriff’s Deputy was injured during an escape attempt by an inmate today. At approximately 1:15 PM an inmate of the Sonoma County Jail, 29-year-old Yesenia Carranza, was transported by ambulance from the main Sonoma County Jail to Sutter Hospital for an undisclosed medical issue.
As is standard protocol, a Sonoma County Sheriff’s Deputy was assigned to guard the inmate while in the hospital receiving medical attention. Shortly after 2:30 PM Carranza suddenly fled on foot through the hospital in an attempt to escape and the deputy gave chase. The deputy was struck by a swinging metal door, striking the deputy with full force to the head. Hospital Security quickly captured Carranza and the deputy was treated at the hospital for injuries sustained. The deputy received significant injuries but is expected to be okay. The deputy was admitted to a local hospital as a precaution. The name of the deputy is not being released at this time.
Carranza has been in custody since June 10, 2018, serving a 30-day sentence for drug charges. She was booked back into the jail after this incident and was charged with resisting arrest resulting in serious bodily injury and escape.
