Detectives investigating death of a Sonoma County Jail inmate.

Sonoma County Sheriff’s Detectives are investigating the death of an inmate from the Sonoma County Jail. Shortly after 1:00 PM today detectives were notified that a Sonoma County jail inmate died at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Santa Rosa.

The inmate, a 32-year-old Sonoma County man, was arrested by Windsor Deputies earlier in the morning. At about 9:09 AM Windsor deputies were dispatched to the Burger King on Hembree Ln regarding a man who just urinated in the parking lot and was possibly intoxicated. The caller reported the man got back into a black Firebird or Camaro and the windows were fogged up as if he’d been there for a while.

Deputies arrived at about 9:15 AM and contacted the man in his vehicle in the parking lot. Deputies determined he was too intoxicated to care for himself and he was arrested without incident for misdemeanor public intoxication. The contact and arrest was captured on body worn cameras. The deputies towed his car and transported him to the Sonoma County Jail, arriving at 9:50 AM.

At 12:23 PM, while seated in a common booking area, the man was witnessed going into medical distress and was treated by four correctional deputies and up to five jail medics. An ambulance was called and transported him to Kaiser Permanente Hospital at 12:41 PM where he later died. Kaiser Hospital advised the Sheriff’s Office of his death at 1:07 PM.

Sheriff’s Detectives have notified the Marin County Sheriff’s Office who will be handling the Coroner’s duties which will include an autopsy to determine his cause of death. The man’s prior medical condition is not known at this time.

While foul play is not suspected at this time, detectives from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office will be investigating the incident. The man’s name will not be released until next of kin is notified.
