HCSO: Harris County Sheriff's Office Response

HARRIS COUNTY, TX - On August 14, 2016, a reportee contacted Harris County Sheriff’s Office dispatchers to report a terroristic threat involving a firearm at a residence on the 5100 block of Sprey Dr. in Harris County, Texas. The reportee advised dispatchers that three dogs inside the home would likely react to approaching first responders. Dispatchers told the reportee to secure the dogs to prevent incident.

Upon arrival, a Sheriff’s deputy was aggressively approached by a canine. In fear for her safety, the deputy discharged her firearm in a downward angle striking the animal. Two civilians were injured by ricochet from the ground.

It is an unfortunate example of all pet owners’ responsibility to secure their animals, and prevent aggressive interaction with first responders. Securing pets by leash, kennel or separating them from contact with first responders is the best way to ensure the safety of both the animal and approaching officers.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Training Academy offers personnel fourteen hours of TCOLE certified training for dealing with animal interactions.

As in all discharge of firearm occurrences the incident is being investigated by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit and the Internal Affairs Division.
