Residential burglar arrested by WCPD after pursuit

On 3/31/16, Walnut Creek PD Officers responded to a report of a residential burglary in progress at a single family home in the 2700 Block of Walnut Blvd. Upon arrival, officers encountered a male, later identified as Joel Steffensen, who fled in a nearby vehicle. Steffensen sped away from officers northbound on Walnut Blvd. While fleeing, Steffensen’s car collided with another vehicle causing minor damage but no injury to the other driver.

During the flight from the Walnut Creek officers, the suspect passed a Contra Costa Sheriff’s Patrol Unit with two deputies who were on routine patrol nearby. The suspect continued to flee and subsequently crashed onto BART property at the intersection of Jones Rd and Walden Rd and fled on foot. Pursuing Deputies and Officers found the suspect hiding a short distance away and engaged in a short foot pursuit. After a brief struggle, the suspect was taken into custody. Steffensen was transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries he sustained in the collision. Steffensen was found to be on parole and placed under arrest for multiple charges. He remains in custody while receiving medical care. Upon release from the hospital the suspect will be transferred to the county jail.

There are no outstanding suspects and there were no injuries to citizens.
