Officer Involved Shooting 2-17-2016 Update

Suspect/Arrested: Carlos Michael Rodriguez (30) Santa Ana

Documented gang member-Parolee released from prison on 09/27/15 for ADW (firearm) on a SAPD officer after serving 8 years

On 2-17-2016 at approximately 3:30pm, Gang Detectives were conducting proactive enforcement in the 2700 block of West McFadden when they attempted to contact suspect Rodriguez. During the contact, suspect Rodriguez fired one of his weapons at a detective, striking him with a graze wound to the head. The detective returned fire striking the suspect on the upper and lower torso areas. Rodriguez was taken into custody without further incident. Two handguns were recovered at the scene.

Both the detective and suspect were treated at the scene by OCFA Paramedics and transported to local trauma centers for care. The detective was treated and later released to go home and recover from his injury. Suspect Rodriguez was admitted to the hospital and is in stable condition. He was booked on the following charges:

• PC 664/187 Attempt murder on an officer

• PC 186.22 gang enhancements

• PC 626.9 possession of a gun within a school zone

• PC 25850(c)(3) gang member in possession of a gun

• PC 25400(a)(2) possession of a concealed gun

SAPD Homicide Detectives are handling the case involving suspect Rodriguez’s criminal actions. Detectives will complete their investigation and submit it to the OC District Attorney for filing. As in all officer involved shootings, the OC District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene and is the lead agency in the Officer-Involved Shooting. The SAPD Professional Standards Unit also responded to the scene to conduct an administrative investigation into the shooting.
