SHERIFF GARCIA NAMES TEEN-AGE 'SHERIFF FOR THE DAY'

Haley Rose Harvey is 16. She’s a junior at Concordia Lutheran High School. She’s a sergeant in the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Explorers program for youth. And today she is the first annual Harris County Sheriff For The Day.

Sheriff Harvey and Sheriff Adrian Garcia will preside over a series of law enforcement meetings at events throughout today, culminating in a free, open-to-the-public forum on education at 6 p.m. at Neighborhood Centers Inc. Ripley House, 4410 Navigation, Houston TX 77011. But first comes her swearing-in ceremony this morning.

"Preparing Harris County's next generation to contribute to our community and lead quality lives will make our community safer," Sheriff Garcia said. "That's why I'm choosing one of our young leaders to see the county from my public servant's view for a day."

The Explorers program provides training and public service opportunities to young people interested in law enforcement. Some former Explorers now work full time for the HCSO.

Sheriff Harvey’s interest in law enforcement began when she witnessed a robbery in a parking lot several years ago: “I knew that something needed to be done (and) . . . after that incident I knew that God was calling me to become a law enforcement officer,” she says. Thus she joined Explorers in June 2012. It has become her hobby/obsession/extra-curricular life.

Through Explorers she has participated in many public service events. Through her church, Trinity Lutheran, she has also worked with other Explorers and sponsors with “45 & Hope,” which delivers food, hygiene packets and prayer to homeless people who “live” along I-45. She has also formed a Criminal Justice Club at her school.

Haley’s goals: Major in criminal justice at Sam Houston State University, attend the HCSO academy and become a deputy.
