NEWS ADVISORY FOR PLANNING PURPOSES ONLY: SHERIFF GARCIA TO APPOINT HONORARY 'SHERIFF FOR THE DAY' TO SHOWCASE YOUTH
News media are encouraged to attend and cover the swearing-in ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, for the first annual Harris County "Sheriff For The Day."
Sheriff Adrian Garcia will preside over the event, where the honorary sheriff, a member of the HCSO Explorers program for youth, will take an oath of office in the Officers Dining Room of the jail at 701 N. San Jacinto.
The ceremony will be followed by the HCSO's weekly command staff meeting, at which the Sheriff For The Day will issue orders. The meeting is open to media.
The Explorers program provides training and public service opportunities to young people interested in law enforcement. Some former Explorers now work full time for the HCSO.
"Preparing Harris County's next generation to contribute to our community and lead quality lives will make our community safer," Sheriff Garcia said. "That's why I'm choosing one of our young leaders to see the county from my public servant's view for a day."
Other Sheriff For The Day events will be announced before Thursday.
Media planning to cover the oath-taking ceremony and command staff meeting are urged to RSVP to [email protected]
