CROSBY BANK ROBBERY: GUNFIRE, TRUCK THEFT, CHASE, ARREST; SUSPECT AT LARGE WAS DRESSED FOR COLD

A bank robber and a sheriff's deputy exchanged gunfire -- with no known injuries resulting -- outside the Community Bank of Texas at 14100 FM 2100 in Crosby around 1:45 p.m. today. Moments later the robber and his accomplice stole a truck being serviced at a nearby car dealership and led officers on a series of chases resulting in the arrest of a robber and a continuing search for the other one, the man who is suspected of firing a gun at the deputy.

The public is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office or Crime Stoppers of Houston (713-222-TIPS) with information about the fugitive suspect, a man in his early to mid 20s wearing dark clothing and last seen driving a stolen Ford pickup.

The case started when a sheriff's deputy driving near the bank saw two men exiting a mini-van and wearing heavy coats. That seemed suspicious considering the temperature was in the 70s. The deputy returned to the scene and saw two men leaving the bank. They had already robbed it. One of the men fired at the deputy, hitting the deputy's vehicle. The deputy returned fire and apparently did not hit the robbers, who ran to the dealership and stole the truck.

With officers in pursuit, one of the robbers was dropped off at a nearby apartment complex, where he got into another vehicle driven by a third suspect. A state trooper who had received a description of that vehicle intercepted it. The robber and the third suspect were arrested.

The robber believed to be the one who shot at the deputy remained at large. He apparently shed his winter coat along the way.
