Sheriff's deputies captured two bank robbers after an off-duty Houston Police Department officer shot and killed their accomplice around 2 p.m. today. The location was Regions Bank at 7044 East FM 1960.

Contrary to information initially provided to investigators, HPD officers involved in the confrontation had not been providing security at the bank.

An HPD officer who had driven to the bank with another off-duty HPD officer to make a loan payment walked into the bank and encountered the armed robbers as they left with stolen money. The officer struggled with one or more of the suspects. Then the second officer intervened. After the robbers got into an SUV, one pointed a shotgun at the second officer, who shot and killed a man in the SUV. The vehicle traveled through a parking lot, where sheriff's deputies apprehended the other robbers.

Deputies had been dispatched to the scene in response to a bank alarm. The surviving robbers were being questioned by sheriff's investigators before the fiing of charges.

The Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit will investigate the shooting aspect and the robbery will be investigated by the FBI Bank Robbery Task Force.
