Jumping Branch Fire still estimated at 175 acres with 0% containment; Air attack operations to resume this morning.
Update on Jumping Branch Fire off Locust Cove Rd.
McDowell County, NC – The North Carolina Forest Service reports the Jumping Branch Fire located off Locust Cove Rd. in Marion is currently estimated at approximately 175 acres and remains 0% contained. There are no evacuation orders at this time. The fire continues to burn between Locust Cove Road and Sugar Cove Road in steep terrain complicated by heavy blow down from Hurricane Helene. These conditions are creating challenging firefighting conditions.
Unified command is established between the NC Forest Service, US Forest Service, and PG Fire & Rescue.
Firefighters worked through the night along Locust Cove Road and NC 80 to provide structure protection. One storage building along NC 80 sustained damage. At this time, no injuries have been reported.
Resources on scene will be assessing opportunities to engage the fire directly where conditions allow. Crews will continue focusing efforts on protecting structures along Locust Cove Road and NC 80.
Air operations will resume this morning. Residents on Lake James and Lake Tahoma are advised to use caution and remain alert for low-flying aircraft that may be dipping water from the lakes to assist with firefighting efforts.
Motorists should avoid NC 80 to ensure the safety of emergency personnel. Drift smoke will continue to affect the area.
Agencies on scene today include PG Fire & Rescue, Ashford North Cove Fire Department, McDowell EMS, McDowell County Emergency Management, McDowell Fire Marshal’s Office, McDowell Rescue, the North Carolina Forest Service, and the U.S. Forest Service.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The next update will be provided this afternoon. A statewide burn ban remains in effect. Outdoor burning is prohibited. Report all outside fires by calling 911.
