Police Arrest Man After Car Pursuit For Multiple Charges

HOLLISTER, CALIFORNIA –October 24, 2019 – On October 23, 2019, an Officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation.  The driver fled and a high speed pursuit ensued until suspect was arrested after crash.

On October 23, 2019 at about 12:50 am, Officer Miguel Masso attempted to make a traffic enforcement stop on a vehicle.  The vehicle failed to stop and continued through several city streets at a high rate of speed before leaving Hollister northbound on Highway 25.

Neighboring agencies were notified of the situation and the direction of travel of the vehicle pursuit.  The Gilroy Police Department and the California Highway Patrol were made aware of the pursuit as it was traveling toward Highway 101.

Deputies from the San Benito Sheriff’s Office joined the pursuit as it continued until reaching the area of Highway 25 near Shore Road.  Although there was very little traffic in the area, the driver of the pursued vehicle collided with another vehicle when it overtook the car and attempted to pass that car on the right shoulder.  The impact sent both vehicles off the road and into a ditch where the victim’s car rolled over.  The suspect vehicle managed to drive back onto the roadway where it collided with the concrete center divider before continuing northbound.

Deputies stopped at the collision site to render aid and called for medical response while Officer Masso continued to follow the suspect vehicle which was now limping along with severe tire damage.    The vehicle came to a stop a few hundred yards down the road where he was taken into custody without further incident.  The driver was identified as Robert Ebertowski (30) originally from the Escalon, CA area.

Officer Masso determined Ebertowski is currently on parole and was driving on a suspended license.  Over 10 pounds of marijuana, suspected stolen credit cards, social security cards, counterfeit social security cards and birth certificates were located in the vehicle. Ebertowski was also found in possession of suspected methamphetamine.

The driver of the other vehicle complained of pain and was treated at the scene by medical staff.

Ebertowski was booked on charges of evading a police officer, felony hit-and-run, violation of his parole terms, possession of a controlled substance, and driving on a suspended license.
