#016 Mental Health Hold
At approximately 1:16 p.m., patrol officers were dispatched to the Fremont Police Department’s main parking/lobby area on an “Ascertain the Problem” detail. NBC news had a reporter and camera crew in place to conduct an interview (unrelated to this event) with one of our press information officers (PIO) just outside of the PD’s main lobby doors. As the news crew was setting up, a white sedan pulled into the parking lot. A male exited the white sedan, waived his hands in the air and made comments stating he was armed with a firearm and that he would “shoot it out” with the police.  The NBC reporter jumped into her vehicle and called another Fremont PIO via cell phone, who notified dispatch.   The male re-entered the white vehicle and several patrol units and officers working in administrative assignments responded to the front parking lot.  They gave commands to the male and he exited the vehicle peacefully. Firearms were pointed at the male who was detained without further incident.  It appears the male was having a mental health related episode, leading him to make the threats in the PD parking lot. The male was placed on a mental health detention. No firearm was ever located.
