You aren't prepared for the Super Bowl until you have a designated driver. #SB50

We are asking Super Bowl 50 fans to plan ahead today – If you’re planning to drink alcohol, make sure you have a non-drinking designated driver or another safe way home!

“Super Bowl Sunday continually ranks as one of the most dangerous times of the year for drunk driving deaths.”  Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) encourages football fans “to play the most important position in the NFL; the designated driver.”

The Fremont Police Department encourages everyone who is planning to participate in functions where alcohol is going to be served, to consider the following tips when making your plans this year.

At the party:

- Respect 21 and never serve alcohol to someone under the legal drinking age and don’t ask a minor to serve you alcohol.

 - Determine ahead of time when you'll stop serving alcohol, such as one hour before the end of the party or at the end of the third quarter of the game (just like in NFL stadiums) and instead begin serving coffee and dessert.

- Serve plenty of food throughout the day.

- Offer a variety of non-alcoholic choices like soft drinks, juice, and water.

- Serve one drink at a time and serve measured drinks.

- Be ready to step in and stop serving someone who has had too much.

- Be prepared for guests to spend the night if an alternative way home is not available.

Find ways to recognize designated drivers at your party:

- Give them a great spot to watch the game.

- Make sure their glass is always full of whatever non-alcoholic drink they're having.

- Let them have first pass at the buffet table.

- Make sure their cars are easy to access when it is time to start driving people home.

If you’re traveling to the game, a local bar, restaurant or other public venue:

- Find ways to recognize your designated driver.  Offer to be the next designated driver, cover their costs or help pay for gas!

- Add the numbers for local cab companies to your cell phone.

- Always wear your seatbelt.

- Text SB50 to 888-777 for traffic and news alerts related to the Super Bowl

Please don’t drink and drive and remember,"Fans don't let fans drive drunk!"
