Fremont Police Arrest Two Men for Auto Burglary

On Tuesday, August 25, 2015, Fremont Police Street Crimes officers and Detectives arrested two men for committing auto burglaries at the Pacific Commons Shopping Center.

Due to recent reports of auto burglaries at the Pacific Commons Shopping Center in south Fremont, plain clothes Detectives went out to the area to conduct follow up on Tuesday evening.  While driving in the area of the shopping center, officers noticed a suspicious vehicle that appeared to be casing parked cars.  Shortly after seeing the vehicle, a 9-1-1 call was received by Fremont Dispatch at a nearby location.  Officers broke from the area and respond to the call.  While assisting with the 9-1-1 call, an auto burglary was reported and confirmed to have just occurred on the 43900 block of Pacific Commons Blvd.  The report was that unknown suspect(s) smashed the right passenger window with an object and took a small computer bag from the front passenger seat that contained a laptop, iPad and miscellaneous cables.  The total value of the loss was $2200.  A second auto burglary was also found a short distance away, with very similar loss reported.

Plain clothes units went back to the area but were unable to locate the suspicious vehicle.  Suspecting they may target another shopping center, officers headed north and found the same suspicious vehicle driving around the Mowry East Shopping Center, located at Mowry Ave and Farwell Dr.   Officers watched as two occupants parked and exited the vehicle and began to look into the windows of parked cars.  When the driver and passenger re-entered the vehicle, officers conducted a traffic stop and detained two men.

Clarence Cherry (26/Oakland resident) and Stanley Turner (22/ Oakland resident) were both arrested for auto burglary. Officers located and recovered stolen property from the two auto burglaries that occurred earlier in the evening on Pacific Commons Blvd.

Please always remember to lock your vehicle and hide all of your valuables out of site when parking and leaving your vehicle.  REMOVE IT, LOCK IT or LOSE IT!

Most auto-burglaries are a crime of opportunity and you can reduce your risk of becoming a victim by taking just a few simple steps.

  • Don’t leave valuables of any kind in your vehicle!

What items are considered valuable? Backpacks, gym bags, iPods, iPads, briefcases, day-planners, cash/coins, checkbooks, credit cards, wallets, purses, laptops, cell phones (and chargers), GPS devices, stereo/CD players (and faceplates), speakers, jewelry, keys and tools.

  • Lock ALL doors and roll up windows even if you’re going only going to be away for a short amount of time.  It only takes seconds for thieves to steal your stuff.
  • If you must leave valuables in your car, stash them out of sight (in the trunk or under the seat) BEFORE you reach your destination.
  • If you are leaving an electronic device in the trunk, place it in Airplane mode and/or make sure the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is turned off, so that it does not emit a signal.

Someone may be watching you stash your valuables when you park your car. Plan your shopping/errands so that you don't load your trunk until you are ready to drive to another destination; never open a trunk, fill it full of valuables, close it, and then just walk away.

  • Once home, unload your valuables immediately. Do not store valuables in your car any longer than necessary and certainly never overnight.
  • If your trunk can be opened from inside your car without a key, lock this feature when you are not in your car or have it disabled, if possible.
  • Don’t leave any sign that there might be valuables hidden in your vehicle.  Remember to also secure docking stations, connector cables, phone chargers, CD’s and loose coins.
  • Park in busy, well-lighted areas and remember to set any alarm or anti-theft device.

Always call the Fremont Police Department to report suspicious activity.  Dial 9-1-1 to report a crime in progress and use the non-emergency number 510-790-6800 option 3, to report non-emergency information.
