On June 29, 2015, at approximately 4:55 a.m., Fremont Police Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call reporting a robbery incident that had just occurred at the Safeway grocery store located at 39100 Argonaut Way (Fremont Hub). The caller stated that an unknown suspect assaulted a store security guard before fleeing with merchandise from the store. Witnesses were able to provide officers with a description of the suspect vehicle, which was described as an older gold Toyota Camry.
At 4:58 a.m., a Fremont Police Officer located the suspect and suspect vehicle in a parking lot at Mowry Ave. and Blacow Rd. The officer attempted an enforcement stop on the vehicle, but the suspect fled towards Mowry Ave. A vehicle pursuit was initiated and immediately terminated when the suspect drove westbound on Mowry Ave. in the eastbound lanes of traffic. The vehicle became disabled after the suspect collided into the center median at Mowry Ave. and Farwell Dr. The suspect then fled on foot towards Interstate 880. A perimeter was established and a police K9 team was called to the scene. At 5:51 a.m., the suspect was located hiding in a parking lot on Farwell Place and was taken into custody with the assistance of the police K9. The suspect was positively identified as the subject who committed the robbery at Safeway.
The suspect was identified as Darryl Garner (24 years old/Oakland resident). Garner was booked into the Fremont Detention Facility on the following charges: robbery, evading arrest, resisting arrest, an outstanding burglary arrest warrant, and for being a wanted parolee-at-large.
