FBI and Local Law Enforcement Seek Public’s Assistance of Severed Fiber Optic Cables in the East Bay and South Bay

SAN FRANCISCO - The FBI, in a close-working relationship with local law enforcement agencies in the Bay Area, is requesting assistance to identify the individuals responsible for vandalizing fiber optic cables in Fremont, Walnut Creek, Alamo, Berkeley, and San Jose, CA. Within the past year, cables were intentionally severed at the following locations:

- 7/6/2014, 9:44 P.M. near 7th St. and Grayson St. in Berkeley, CA.
- 7/6/2014 11:39 P.M. near Niles Canyon Blvd. and Mission Blvd. in Fremont, CA.

- 7/7/2014 2:13 A.M. near Stockton Ave. and University Ave. in San Jose, CA.
- 2/24/2015 11:30 P.M. near Niles Canyon Blvd. and Mission Blvd. in Fremont, CA.

- 6/9/2015 1:38 P.M. near Jones Road and Parkside Dr. in Walnut Creek, CA.

Anyone who may have been in these areas during these times and saw anything either suspicious or related to normal telecommunications maintenance is urged to contact the FBI. The individuals may appear to be normal telecommunications maintenance workers or possess tools consistent with that job role.

At this time there is no indication these incidents are linked with the sabotage of the PG&E Metcalf substation in April 2013.

The FBI can be reached 24 hours a day at 415-553-7400 in the San Francisco area. All calls are confidential. Tips can also be submitted at: tips.fbi.gov.
