Advisory

Scammer Advisory! Scams have been attempted in Illinois with scammers pretending to be ComEd representatives threatening disconnect.

Scammers in Texas using a disconnection payment scheme to scam customers out of money are increasingly threatening victims with disconnection by using the name of the local electric utility, ComEd.. This scam has recently been attempted in Illinois with scammers pretending to be ComEd representative.

NIMEC Executive Director David Hoover explains that “under the disconnection scam, scammers call customers and threaten customers with disconnection of utility service, unless they receive immediate payment, typically through some untraceable, non-refundable method, including Visa or other prepaid cards, PayPal, and/or wire transfers.”

Since the scammers must threaten disconnection, the earliest examples of these scams in Illinois have used ComEd's name in threatening the customer.

If you should get such a call threatening disconnection or have questions about the status of your electricity account, hang up and place a call directly to ComEd to confirm the disconnection. If you have additional questions, residents can always call NIMEC at 1-800-727-3820 or the Village’s Public Works Department at 630-896-9241.

The Village of Montgomery is part of the Northern Illinois Municipal Electricity Collaborative (NIMEC), which is a group of municipal governments working together to obtain cost efficient electricity service for municipal residents through the electricity aggregation program.
