Suspect Arrested for Intentionally Smearing Blood on an Officer
Law enforcement officers are exposed to various unknown dangers and threats on a daily basis in their efforts to ensure the safety and quality of life in the community. This report is an incident where an officer was intentionally exposed to blood smeared on them by a suspect during arrest.
On January 10, 2023 at 09:05 pm Janesville officers were sent to 332 Park Ave for a disturbance. A male and female were reported being involved in an aggressive verbal argument inside the residence for twenty to thirty minutes. Officers made contact at the front door with San Juanita Perez, who shut the door on them. Officers investigated further confirming Perez was out on bond with restrictions preventing her from being at 332 Park Ave and from having contact with the male living there. Additional officers arrived to attempt another contact at the residence when an officer spotted Perez walking through the backyard of the residence to leave. When Perez heard and saw the officer she ran. When the officer yelled for her to stop running she complied.
The officer approached Perez to take her in to custody and handcuff her. The officer had placed one hand in a handcuff. As the officer was handcuffing Perez they noticed Perez’s other hand had blood dripping off her finger. The officer gave specific verbal commands instructing Perez not to get any of her blood on them. Perez resisted arrest, turned her body toward the officer, and intentionally used her bloody finger to smear blood on the officer’s face in what seemed to be an attempt to stick her bloody finger in the officer’s mouth. The officer had to move their head to avoid the blood getting in their mouth, but it did get all over their face, nose, and lips. A second officer arrived and they were able to take Perez in to custody.
Perez was taken to the Rock County Sheriff’s Office jail where she was held. The officer had to go to the hospital to receive treatment for a blood exposure.
