Student Community Helpers Honored at Heroes and Helpers 2022

South Brunswick Police Department's seventh annual Heroes and Helpers event was held Wednesday, December 14th, at Target on Route 1 in South Brunswick. The event recognized some truly exceptional kids with a special day to honor their accomplishments. These 12 recipients were each nominated by their individual school for their outstanding work and character.

These kids have been involved in many different types of school and community activities:

  • The Public Health Club and Peers Assisting Life Skills
  • Spreading awareness about the youth vaping epidemic
  • Serving as the Middlesex County Student State Representative for Incorruptible Us
  • Advocating for school-wide activities during Women’s History Month
  • Actively reaching out to others to play during recess, to make all students feel included
  • Writing inspiring notes to teachers and other students
  • Donating recess time to help younger students in their classrooms
  • Making sure that all their classmates are included, making them feel like they belong
  • Displaying outstanding sportsmanship
  • Being active in the Hungarian-American community
  • Volunteering to tutor other students
  • Being involved in scouting and getting involved in social causes
  • Standing up against bullying by being an upstander, being an ally, and being a friend
  • Taking care of their fellow students, staff members, schools, and families
  • Going out of their way to “help anyone at any time”
  • And doing all of this with smiles on their faces

They’ve been involved, formally and informally, in school and peer leadership activities. Some are student council representatives, Safety Patrol members, Bus Helpers, Classroom Helpers, Student Ambassadors, and Peer Mediators.

They are role models and mentors, setting a good example for others to follow. These kids are known to help staff in the schools, provide motivation and guidance to classmates, and to offer kindness, compassion, and a cheerful word to all they meet throughout the day. They are often thought of as the unofficial school good will ambassadors, bringing smiles to all they meet throughout the day.

And almost every single nomination mentioned the word “positive”, which says something about their attitudes while they manage all of this.

Chief Raymond Hayducka said, “It’s a pleasure to recognize these 12 students for their outstanding efforts.  There are over 10,000 students in the district and these young men and women were chosen because they have made a huge positive impact in their school or community. We applaud their efforts.”

Each honoree was given a framed certificate of achievement, a Target gift card, and their own personal police officer to accompany them through the store on their shopping spree. The program was funded by a partnership between Target, the two South Brunswick Police Department unions, the PBA and the FOP, the South Brunswick School District Administrators, and Noor Ul Iman School.
