West Covina Police Department Investigates Fatal Traffic Collision

On Thursday, December 1, 2022, at approximately 9:10 pm, officers received a call regarding a traffic collision in the area of Sunset Avenue and Cameron Avenue in the City of West Covina. It was reported a subject involved in the traffic collision fled on foot and was observed by witnesses in the area. Officers located the involved subject and he was identified as Luis Banuelos, 32, resident of Long Beach. Investigation revealed the subject was involved in a theft from a nearby business and was fleeing the scene leading up to the traffic collision.
As a result of the traffic collision, one of the involved parties was transported to a local area hospital for injuries. The victim later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. The West Covina Police Departments Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) and detectives with the Investigation & Support Services Division (ISSD) responded to the scene to handle the investigation. The investigation is still on-going.
Luis Banuelos was arrested and booked at the West Covina Police Department for assault with a deadly weapon, driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs, and hit and run with injury.
