Arrest made in recent South Campus robbery

On September 12th, officers arrested a suspect in connection with a recent armed robbery in the area of Dwight Way and Benvenue Avenue.

On September 11th at about 1:33 am, two men in their 20’s were walking up (eastbound) Dwight Way when a pick-up truck stopped near the crosswalk they were approaching at Benvenue Avenue.  A suspect got out of the truck—armed with a rifle and demanded their property.  After one of them were robbed of their backpack, the men ran away.  The suspect’s vehicle was described as a white pick-up truck with tinted windows.

On September 12th at about 7:44 am, an alert UCPD officer spotted the white pick-up in the area south of UC Berkeley campus and notified Berkeley PD.  When officers arrived, they attempted to stop the vehicle on Telegraph Avenue (near Blake Street).  Instead of stopping, the suspect increased his speed to flee.  Officers pursued the vehicle through several streets in Berkeley until it reached the westbound dead-end of Russell Street near San Pablo Park.  Although the suspect ran from the vehicle into the surrounding neighborhood, officers located him on a rooftop a few blocks away.

On September 13th, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged the suspect (an 18-year-old Oakland man) with PC 211—Robbery, VC 2800.2(a)—eluding the police, as well as a criminal enhancement for using a firearm.
