Advisory

Home invasions through slider doors at apartment complexes throughout Meridian Township.

HOME INVASIONS

The Meridian Township Police Department has investigated approximately twenty home invasions since October of 2009. The cases are believed to be related based on similar events that have occurred at each break-in. The suspect or suspects have targeted 2nd and 3rd floor apartments. They climb up the balcony and enter through the slider door. Once inside, containers located within the apartment are used to load up electronic equipment (including televisions, laptop computers, gaming systems, and digital cameras). After the items are loaded into the containers, the suspects exit through the apartment door and carry the property to a vehicle waiting in the parking lot. This method of exiting gives the appearance of someone moving out of their apartment; therefore, possibly allowing the suspects to escape without being noticed.

Meridian Township Police are asking residents to secure slider doors not only with the lock provided but also with a wooden or metal dowel put in the track of the slider. The dowel will assist in preventing the slider door from opening far enough for a person to gain entry. Police are asking residents to call 911 if they see any suspicious subjects walking along the balcony side of apartments or unfamiliar subjects leaving an apartment building with electronics.

Police are seeking assistance from anyone having information regarding these crimes. Please call Meridian Township Police at (517) 853-4800 or Crime Stoppers at (517) 483-STOP.
