*UPDATE* #LASD Homicide Investigators Responded to a Deputy Involved Shooting Investigation, 1800 blk West Avenue J #Lancaster

Lancaster deputy personnel responded to the 1800 block of West Avenue J in the city of Lancaster regarding a suicidal person with a knife call for service.  Investigators learned Lancaster deputies encountered the armed suspect outside of the business.  The suspect had a knife in hand and refused the deputies’ orders to drop the weapon.  Less lethal weapons were deployed but had minimal effect.  The suspect removed a pistol grip crossbow from his backpack and raised the crossbow at the direction of deputy personnel.  A deputy involved shooting occurred.  The male Hispanic suspect was struck by deputy gunfire.  He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased. 

A knife and pistol grip crossbow were recovered at the scene. 
 
No deputies were injured in the shooting.

Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and no one is hit by the gunfire, multiple investigations immediately begin at the scene.  These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Internal Affairs Bureau as well as sheriff's station or Detective Division investigators.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process.  Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.

NARRATIVE:  
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives responded to the 1800 block of West Avenue J, in the city of Palmdale regarding a deputy involved shooting investigation. The incident occurred on Sunday, June 5, 2022 at approximately 1:08 p.m.

The armed male adult suspect was struck by deputy gunfire.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced deceased.  

No deputies were injured.

Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene.  These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process.  Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted.  Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.  Input from Constitutional Policing Advisors is provided during the process.  The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
