-------------------------Original Press Release Below-------------------------

Los Angeles County Homicide Detectives are continuing their investigation into the deputy-involved shooting that occurred at the 12100 block of Foster Road in the city of Norwalk.

Deputies assigned to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’ Department Apprehension Team were actively searching for a suspect in the area. The suspect was identified as an individual who committed a recent assault with a deadly weapon with a firearm and attempted carjacking in Norwalk.

Deputies located the suspect who was walking in the area. A deputy attempted to detain the suspect, at which the suspect produced a handgun, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. The suspect attempted to flee on foot when an additional deputy engaged him, and a second deputy-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect continued to flee, still armed with a handgun as he entered a front yard of a nearby residence. An additional deputy attempted to detain him, and a third deputy-involved shooting occurred. The suspect proceeded to make entry into that location, at which time the residents, who did not know the suspect, proceeded to exit and made contact with the deputies.

The residents were removed from the area, and the location was contained, and deputies requested the assistance of the Special Enforcement Bureau (LASD SWAT team). Special Enforcement Bureau deputies arrived at the location, assumed control of the tactical operation, and determined the suspect was inside the residence. After utilizing department resources, special enforcement deputies entered the location and arrested the suspect.

They discovered the suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso. He was treated at the scene and subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

During a check of the surrounding yard of the location, deputies located a second individual (victim), a male Hispanic 67, lying on the ground unresponsive. Paramedics were summoned to the location and determined the male victim sustained trauma to the upper torso, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Detectives are processing evidence and canvassing the area for possible witnesses.

No deputies were injured.

The investigation is ongoing, and there is no additional information at this time.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.

Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene.  These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process.  Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted.  Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.  Input from Constitutional Policing Advisors is provided during the process.  The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
