Incident: Vehicle vs. BNSF Train Collision

Location: 200 block of S. Lilac Ave.

Case#: 932200021

Involved Party: Edwin Herrera, 30 year old resident of Rialto

Synopsis:

On Saturday, Jan. 1 at 2:06 PM, Rialto Police Department dispatch received reports of a freight train involved in a collision with a vehicle at the Lilac Ave. railroad crossing.  Officers were dispatched and arrived on scene at 2:09 PM, where they made contact with the driver of the vehicle, identified as Edwin Herrera.  Herrera was the single occupant of the vehicle, and was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for his injuries.  Witnesses at the scene told officers  the control arms for the coming train were down and working properly, however Herrera drove into opposing lanes of traffic and around the control arms.  The westbound train collided with Herrera’s vehicle on the tracks before coming to a stop.  The train engineer was not injured and there were no other passengers on the train.  The Rialto Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded to complete the investigation related to the collision.
