Incident Summary

On 11/21/2021 at approximately 12:41 PM, the Petaluma Police Department Dispatch Center received a 911 call from a business stating that someone had just stolen a customer’s vehicle from its business. The witness observed the vehicle driving southbound on Hopper Street and provided a description of the vehicle.

Nearby Petaluma officers observed the vehicle stopped on Hopper Street, with a male subject throwing items into the trunk quickly. The officers made contact with the subject and attempted to detain him. As the officers approached, the subject began to fight with the officers, causing one of the officers to fall to the ground where she received minor injuries that required minor medical attention later.

After breaking free of the officers, the subject entered the stolen vehicle and began to drive away. The subject then intentionally rammed two marked police vehicles that had boxed the vehicle in. Both patrol vehicles were still occupied by officers, and the subject rammed the officers in an apparent attempt to escape. Neither of the officers were injured and both police vehicles had moderate damage sustained.

The subject proceeded to drive the stolen vehicle southbound on Hopper Street and continued to the area of a nearby hotel and construction site near the riverfront. Officers continued to pursue the vehicle and momentarily lost sight of it while traveling through the construction site. Moments later, they located the stolen vehicle that had collided with a chain link fence and had become disabled.

Nearby witnesses advised officers of where the suspect had been last seen. Petaluma officers created a perimeter around the area and asked for additional resources due to the subject committing an assault with a deadly weapon on two officers. A Petaluma K9 Officer, along with a Sonoma County Sheriff K9 deputy and the CHP Air Unit responded to the area to assist. Several locations were checked, but officers were unable to locate the subject.

Approximately an hour later, a community member called Petaluma PD and reported that his bicycle had just been stolen and he had chased the suspect but lost visual of him nearby. The description provided by the victim matched the subject from the assault on the officers. Several officers responded to the area, along with CHP’s Air Patrol Unit and searched the area but were unable to locate him. Petaluma officer learned there was a significant delay in time before the victim was able to contact the police.

The subject in this incident is wanted for several crimes, including assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, and evading a police officer.

After reviewing the involved officers Body Worn Camera footage, we were able to obtain a photograph of the suspect in this investigation. Please see the attached photograph and contact the Petaluma Police Department if you can identify him. If you see the subject please do not approach and call the police.
