Update from Mayor Bhalla on COVID-19 (9/13)

Below is an update on COVID-19 from Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla:

The Hoboken Health Department reports the following new COVID-19 cases:

September 4: 1
September 5: 10
September 6: 4
September 7: 4
September 8: 12
September 9: 12
September 10: 13

Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been a total of 5,616 known, confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 56 fatalities.

On Friday, September 10, nine people were hospitalized at Hoboken University Medical Center with COVID-19, two of whom are Hoboken residents. Of the two Hoboken residents, one is vaccinated, and one is unvaccinated. The other eight individuals are not vaccinated.

The vaccine continues to prevent the majority of COVID-related hospitalizations and deaths. According to the state, of the 5.3 million New Jersey residents who are fully vaccinated, 0.35% tested positive for COVID-19, 0.007% of fully vaccinated individuals were hospitalized for COVID-19, and 0.002% of fully vaccinated individuals died due to COVID-19 complications. Overwhelmingly, COVID-19 related deaths and hospitalizations are amongst those who are not vaccinated or who are under vaccinated. This data continues to illustrate what we already know, the vaccines work.

Strong vaccination rates are critical to fighting this pandemic. Please, if you have not done so already, go get your COVID-19 vaccine to protect yourself and those around you, including those who can not get vaccinated.

Other precautions residents should take to stay safe include:

  • Prioritizing outdoor socialization with vaccinated individuals
  • Avoiding large indoor crowds
  • Wearing a mask when the vaccination status of others is unknown
  • Avoiding travel to regions with high infection rates

The Mu variant

In New Jersey, the Delta variant continues to be the dominant variant, although a very small portion of COVID-19 positive cases have been tied to the Mu variant.

As of last week, the State has identified 16 cases caused by the Mu variant, while the Delta variant makes up about 98% of variants in New Jersey.

The CDC has not yet classified Mu as either a variant of concern or a variant of interest, but the CDC and the NJ Department of Health are continuing to monitor, evaluate, and collect data on this variant.

According to the CDC, the best way to slow the emergence of new variants is to reduce the spread of infection by taking measures to protect yourself, including getting a COVID-19 vaccine when available.

Testing and vaccination schedule

Hoboken’s Health Department continues to partner with Medicine Man Pharmacy and Compounding and Better Life Pharmacy to provide vaccinations with all three vaccines, as well as third doses for immunocompromised individuals who received Pfizer or Moderna.

We are still awaiting guidance from the federal government on booster shots for those who received a full course of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines.

The rollout depends on authorization of boosters by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommendations by the CDC’s independent Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).

As soon as we know who will be eligible and when they will be eligible, we will roll out booster shots with our local partners and ensure they are available to our residents.
