Advisory

09/08 STORMS EXPECTED - POSSIBLE FLASH FLOODING ON ROADWAYS / DEBRIS UPDATE / SCHOOL ROUTE INFO / HAZARDOUS WASTE

WEATHER
We have been monitoring inclement weather heading in our direction.  Tonight, we expect periods thunderstorms to enter the area after 8pm, with storm chances until after midnight. We’re expecting brief periods of heavy rain expected with the possibility of flash flooding in low-lying, poorly draining areas.
In preparation for the weather, the Cranford DPW and Cranford Fire Department have been clearing debris from the storm drains to mitigate drainage.  The Cranford Fire Department has serviced any emergency water pumps should they be necessary.  If you experience a significant water issue, contact the Cranford Fire Department at 908-709-7360.  As always, dial 9-1-1 for EMERGENCIES ONLY.
Unlike last week’s storm that called for 6” of rain over 12 hours and instead dropped nearly 10” of rain within 6 hours, tonight’s storm system calls for less than 1” of rain in most areas, with the possibility of 1” to 1.5” in total.

VEHICLES
Out of an abundance of caution, if you would like to move any vehicles parked in low-lying, poor-draining areas, the Cranford Recreation and Parks Department has announced that both the Centennial Avenue Pool and Orange Avenue Pool parking lots may be used.  Once the storm has passed and it is safe to do so, those vehicles should be removed from these Township parking lots on 09/09/2021.  DO NOT PARK IN ANY SCHOOL PARKING LOTS.

SAFETY – SCHOOL OPENING
Cranford Public Schools are on-schedule to open tomorrow September 9th, 2021.  Parents should consider that there are debris piles currently being removed in affected areas of town that may coincide with school-routes – such as Belmont Avenue.  We ask parents to remind children to stay clear of debris piles and to be cautious of the influx of heavy equipment actively being used in this recovery effort.  Additionally, the first day of school typically brings traffic congestion.  Please allow extra time during school arrival and dismissal time(s).
