LASD Homicide Detectives Continue to Assist Monterey Park Police Department with an Officer Involved Shooting Investigation
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide investigators are assisting Monterey Park Police Department with an officer involved shooting investigation. The incident was reported Friday, September 3rd, 2021, at approximately 1:55 p.m., on Rowan Avenue just south of Cesar E. Chavez Avenue in East Los Angeles.
Monterey Park police officers responded to a residence in Monterey Park regarding a domestic violence incident, wherein a man brandished a firearm. Upon the officers’ arrival, they learned the suspect had fled in a red SUV. The suspect was known to both the victim and officers, and was known to frequent the East Los Angeles area.
Officers from Monterey Park Police Department responded to the area of Rowan Avenue and Cesar E. Chavez Avenue to canvass the area for the suspect. Officers observed the suspect driving southbound on Rowan Avenue from Cesar E. Chavez Avenue in the red SUV.
Officers positioned their marked patrol vehicles behind the SUV to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle came to a stop and the suspect exited the vehicle with a firearm in his hand and ran. An officer involved shooting occurred at that time.
The suspect continued to run north on Rowan Avenue when an exchange of gunfire occurred between the suspect and a second officer. The suspect continued to run west through an alley where he ultimately discarded his firearm and attempted to enter a passerby’s vehicle before falling to the ground and being taken into custody by Monterey Park officers.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital by Los Angeles County Fire Department were he is being treated for a non-life threating gunshot wound to the upper torso. The suspect’s firearm was recovered.
No officers were injured in the incident.
The investigation is on-going and there is no further information available at this time.
