Incident Summary

On 08/23/2021 at approximately 6:37 PM, Petaluma officers responded to a report of a grand theft in progress at Ulta Beauty. The suspects were reported to be stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of merchandise from the store. The suspects were observed by employee’s fleeing the store with over $10,000.00 in stolen merchandise. They were then observed getting into a black Acura sedan with paper plates on it.

An officer observed the suspect vehicle in the area of South McDowell Boulevard and Caulfield Lane. The vehicle was observed continuing southbound on S. McDowell Boulevard and the officer began to follow the vehicle. Near the intersection with Baywood Drive, the officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, believing it was the suspect vehicle. The vehicle rapidly accelerated and continued to travel southbound on S. McDowell Boulevard. The officer attempted to pursue the vehicle for approximately one block, when he lost sight of it and discontinued the pursuit near Casa Grande Road.

The officer continued to search the area where he believed they may have gone. Shortly after, the officer located a three-car collision on Lakeville Highway and South McDowell Boulevard. The suspect vehicle was located with major damage along the roadway edge, resting against a power pole. Two of the occupants fled the scene on foot, and three remained in the vehicle.

The three occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody without incident. One of the suspects was later located on Indigo Drive in an apartment complex. The second subject that fled, was later located at a nearby gas station with moderate injuries from the collision. All of the suspects were treated at the scene by members of the Petaluma Fire Department. Four of the five that were treated, were taken to local hospitals to be medically cleared prior to being booked into county jail. Only minor injuries were sustained during the collision.

It was determined the suspect vehicle had traveled from southbound S. McDowell Boulevard to westbound Lakeville Highway through a red light, causing an uninvolved pick-up truck to collide with the suspect vehicle. This caused the pick-up truck to then collide with another uninvolved vehicle.

The occupants of the pick-up truck received some minor injuries and were released on scene after being treated by members of the Petaluma Fire Department. The second uninvolved driver was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries and was later released.

Thousands of dollars’ worth of Ulta Beauty products were located in the suspect vehicle. All five of the suspects were later booked at the Sonoma County Jail for various charges, which included: Commercial Burglary, Conspiracy and obstructing an officer.

Ulta has recently been the target of several brazen thefts totaling tens of thousands of dollars, and it was believed this incident may be related to prior thefts. Petaluma alone has received several reports of these incidents occurring in this similar style. The Petaluma Police Department is continuing to investigate if these suspects were related to prior Ulta Beauty thefts and are working with other bay area agencies.

If anyone witnessed the collision, we encourage you to contact the Petaluma Police Department at 707-778-4372.
