A search & rescue operation on Mt. Baldy was successful after the hoist rescue of 13 hikers & two others airlifted

DATE/TIME: July 20, 2021

INCIDENT:    Search & Rescue Operation

LOCATION: Mt. Baldy

SUMMARY:
On July 19, 2021 at 9:00 a.m., approximately 51 students from the Downey High School Soccer and Lacrosse teams, along with two coaches and a teacher, went on a group hike on Mt. Baldy. They hiked Devils Backbone and Ski Hut Trail and eventually broke into several groups. During the hike, a large group of the students walked back to their vehicles and left the area.
At about 7:00 p.m. deputies and a Sheriff’s helicopter responded to a call from the remaining hikers that they were unable to hike out safely. Aviation crews responded and securely hoisted 10 juveniles and three adults from the mountain. During the rescue, deputies were advised that two of the hikers, a 15-year-old female and 16-year-old male, were unaccounted for.

The search for the two missing hikers began using search & rescue ground crews and Sheriff’s Aviation. Volunteers searched through the night and at 8:40 a.m. the two hikers were found and airlifted to safety.
