Update from Mayor Bhalla on COVID-19 (7/7); vaccine and testing schedule for July
Below is an update from Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla on COVID-19:
The Hoboken Health Department has reported the following new COVID-19 cases:
June 20: 1
June 21: 0
June 22: 1
June 23: 3
June 24: 1
June 25: 2
June 26: 1
June 27: 0
June 28: 2
June 29: 0
June 30: 1
July 1: 3
July 2: 2
July 3: 0
July 4: 1
July 5: 0
Carepoint has reported treating no patients with COVID-19, while Hoboken has not had a COVID-19 related hospitalization in nearly 45 days. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 5,054 known, confirmed cases and 52 fatalities.
While there were a select few breakthrough cases in Hoboken in June, as before, the vaccines worked exactly as intended, and prevented serious illness in those instances. Those individuals had only mild to no symptoms reported.
Unsurprisingly, Dr. Anthony Fauci reported that across the country, more than 99% of the COVID-19 related deaths in June were individuals who were not vaccinated.
Update on vaccines
I’m encouraged to share that according to the State of New Jersey, we’ve made progress over the past month in our vaccination rates. For those 18 years and older, 75% have received at least a first dose, while 68% are fully vaccinated, and across residents of any age, 66% have received a first dose while 60% are fully vaccinated. And while there is a margin for error, the State is reporting that nearly 100% of our seniors 65 and up have received at least a first dose, while 94% are fully vaccinated. Needless to say, Hoboken is doing its part, thanks to the everyone who has made the effort to get vaccinated, in beating back the pandemic in our region.
Getting vaccinated is our best protection against the delta variant
As mentioned in the previous update, while we have much to be proud of with our vaccination rates, I remain concerned for those who choose to remain unvaccinated, due to the rapid spread of the delta variant. This new variant is highly transmissible and now accounts for the majority of new COVID-19 cases, according to the CDC. Getting vaccinated remains the best way to stay safe from the variant, and have been proven to protect against serious disease, hospitalization and death.
Planning for a return to school
If your child is 12 years or older and has not yet been vaccinated, now is the best time to begin the process given the length of time between the two Pfizer shots and for the full two weeks after the second shot to gain maximum protection. Both Medicine Man Pharmacy and Better Life Pharmacy offer the Pfizer vaccines at their clinics (below), which are authorized for anyone 12 years of age and up.
