INCIDENT: Felony Evading Disregard for Public Safety / Use of Force
LOCATION: #1 – 7th Street / Lincoln Street, Victorville
#2 – East of 115 / La Paz, Victorville
SUSPECT: Willie Jones, age 32, a resident of Victorville
SUMMARY:
On Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at approximately 12:41 a.m., a deputy from the Victorville Police Department attempted a traffic stop of a motorcycle for various traffic violations in the area of 7thStreet and Lincoln Street in Victorville. The driver, later identified to be Willie Jones, failed to yield and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit continued at a high rate of speed; Jones failed to stop at multiple traffic signals and entered the northbound lanes of the I15 Freeway. The suspect was in the northbound lanes traveling southbound, narrowly missing several head-on collisions withoncoming vehicles. At approximately 12:45 a.m., the suspect exited La Paz Avenue and discarded his motorcycle near the car dealership, fleeing on foot. Deputies immediately established a perimeter around the location. The suspect was found hiding in the parking lot of the dealership. A use of force occurred whiledeputies were attempting to take the suspect into custody. Asupervisor arrived on the scene and discovered Jones’ arrest was captured on surveillance cameras from a nearby business. Once the supervisor reviewed the surveillance footage, there was immediate concern about a deputy’s actions. The supervisor immediately requested that an investigation be conducted regarding the deputy’s conduct.
Willie Jones was arrested. Before being transported, he was provided medical care and booked into the High Desert Detention Center for Felony Evading – Disregard for Public Safety.
“This incident raises concerns. I expect my deputies to remain professional while engaging the public. A full investigation is underway, and the involved deputy has been placed on Administrative Leave while detectives from our Specialized Investigations Division complete their investigation into the use of force. Once the investigation is completed, it will be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for their review.” – Sheriff McMahon.
