Rogelio Rogel charged with multiple felonies after threatening others with a machete

At 1:56 AM on June 14, 2021, Anchorage Police responded to the Dimond Center at 800 E Dimond Boulevard in reference to an adult male, who was armed with a machete, driving his vehicle into the south entrance of the mall.   The caller further advised the suspect was physically threatening Mall Security with the weapon.
Upon arrival officers made contact with the suspect, later identified as 44-year-old Rogelio Rogel, just outside of the building.  Officers attempted to negotiate with Rogel for several minutes to include K9 and Taser warnings.  Rogel refused to comply with all instructions given to include putting down his weapon.  Ultimately K9 Ray was deployed who made contact with Rogel’s leg.  Rogel continued to fight and he swung the machete at the K9 which caused a laceration to one of the dog’s legs.  An officer deployed a Taser at which time several officers were able to take custody of Rogel, remove the machete from his hand, and place him into handcuffs.
Rogel was evaluated by medics on scene and then transported to a hospital where he was treated for the dog bite.  Afterwards Rogel was remanded at the Anchorage Jail and charged with multiple felonies to include Harming a Police Dog II, five counts of Assault III, Felony Operating under the Influence (two or more OUI convictions in the previous ten years), Criminal Mischief, Resisting Arrest, and Driving While License Revoked.
No Mall Security personnel were injured.  APD is grateful to Mall Security who helped evacuate others from the building while APD was engaged with the suspect.
The K9 was transported to Pet Emergency where he received staples in his leg and was subsequently released back to duty.
