INDIANAPOLIS - On Friday, April 30, 2021, just after 1:00 p.m., IMPD North District officers were dispatched to the 8500 block of E. 82nd Street (Mary Evelyn Castle Early Learning Center) on a report of a person shot. The administrators and staff quickly put the campus on an emergency lockdown for the safety of the staff and students. When officers arrived, including Lawrence Township School Police, they located an adult female with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound(s). IEMS arrived and transported the victim to an area hospital in critical condition, but she was later upgraded to stable but serious condition. The victim’s injuries are considered to be non-life threatening. IMPD will not provide additional updates on her condition.
IMPD Aggravated Assault Detectives responded to the scene and began the investigation. The Indianapolis Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to assist in identifying and collecting potential forensic evidence. Further investigation has revealed that this was a domestic disturbance between the victim and a male, later identified as 32-year-old Brandon Shockley. IMPD detectives attempted to locate Shockley and arrest him for attempted murder.
Using information received through cooperation from members of the community, on Monday, May 3, 2021 at approximately 9:40 p.m. IMPD Violent Crime Investigators identified an individual believed to be Brandon Shockley traveling westbound on Interstate-70 in Vigo County. Detectives notified the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, who tried to stop Shockley; however, a vehicle pursuit ensued. According to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, at some point the suspect vehicle travelled off of the roadway. A short time later shots were fired from inside the suspect vehicle and shots were returned by responding law enforcement units. The suspect was pronounced deceased on the scene.
IMPD detectives followed the incident into Illinois; however, they were not involved in the pursuit and did not fire any rounds during this incident.
