The Turlock Police Department is excited to announce the Community Advisory Board to the Chief of Police (CABCOP) has been selected and had its first official meeting on March 25, 2021.

Turlock Police Department has committed itself to transparency. Statistical reports and informational documents are available online. The Interim Chief of Police engages directly with the community on social media and during community events. The CABCOP is another key piece of connecting the community and police department to work together as a team.

Advertisements for CABCOP members went out on social media and in the local newspapers. Out of over thirty applicants, eleven were selected for the first group. They will serve one to four year terms. The CABCOP is comprised of members that represent a broad range of community segments.

“We are always looking for ways to connect with our community,” said Interim Chief Steve Williams. “Getting direct input from such a diverse group of people is invaluable.”

CABCOP is an advisory board that will have the opportunity to review policies, procedures, programs, and events. Those events may include critical incidents that have impacted the community in some way. The board will provide insight, suggestions, and a different perspective for the Chief of Police to consider when making decisions.
During his opening remarks, Interim Chief Williams quoted Sir Robert Peel saying, “The police are the public and that the public are the police.” He continued, “Without the confidence and support of the public, the police department has no authority.”

After a general overview of the program and the Department, the first topic discussed was the Unsheltered Homeless and Encampment Crisis (UHEC) and the plan that had been set forth to date. The newly formed CABCOP immediately provided insight and ideas.

While it is intended to meet at least quarterly, the next meeting is already scheduled for April.
